Descendants of John of Gaunt

One of my favorite books as a teenager was Katherine by Ana Seton.  How fascinating to find one's family descended from those I'd known as characters in a book.  see also:  http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/royalty/dukel-z.html

In Act 2, Scene 1 of Richard II, John of Gaunt is given the immortal lines:

This royal throne of kings, this scepter'd isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall,
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England

John of Gaunt [Mid. Eng. Gaunt=Ghent, his birthplace], 134099, duke of Lancaster; fourth son of Edward III of England. He married (1359) Blanche, heiress of Lancaster, and through her became earl (1361) and duke (1362) of Lancaster. The Lancaster holdings made him the wealthiest and one of the most influential nobles in England. He served under his brother, Edward the Black Prince, in the Hundred Years War and went (1367) on his campaign to aid Peter the Cruel of Castile. After the death of Blanche he married (1371) Peter's daughter, Constance, and thus gained a claim to the Castilian throne. When the Black Prince became ill during the French campaign of 1370–71, John took chief command. In 1373 he led his army from Calais to Bordeaux, but the expedition accomplished little. After a truce was reached (1375) he returned to England, where he allied himself with the corrupt court party led by Alice Perrers, mistress of the aging Edward III. For a short time John of Gaunt in effect ruled England. His party was temporarily dislodged from power by the Good Parliament of 1376, but John was soon able to restore his friends and assembled a hand-picked Parliament in 1377. Hostility to the strong clerical party, led by William of Wykeham, caused him to support the movement of John Wyclif. After the accession (1377) of his nephew, Richard II, John remained the most powerful figure in the government, but he devoted himself primarily to military matters. In 1386, allied with John I of Portugal, who married one of his daughters, he led an expedition to make good his Castilian claims against John I of Castile. John of Gaunt finally agreed to peace in 1388, transferred his claims to his daughter by Constance of Castile, and married her to the future Henry III of Castile. He returned to England in 1389, was made duke of Aquitaine, and helped to restore peace between Richard II and the hostile barons led by Thomas of Woodstock, duke of Gloucester. In 1396, John of Gaunt married Catherine Swynford, many years his mistress, and had his children by her, under the name of Beaufort, declared legitimate. He died soon after the king had exiled his eldest son, the duke of Hereford (later Henry IV, first of the royal line of Lancaster). John is also remembered as the patron of the poet Geoffrey Chaucer.

See biography by S. Armitage-Smith (1904, repr. 1964); J. R. Hulbert, Chaucer's Official Life (1912, repr. 1970).

Notes for KATHERINE DE ROET:Philippa de Roet, Katherine's sister, lady-in-waiting to the Queen, married Geoffrey Chaucer in 1366.   More than likely this was an arranged political marriage and he felt no true companionship towards her, as he never dedicated poems to his wife or ever directly referred to her. His literary allusions to married life are mostly ironical and unflattering.  http://www.godecookery.com/chaucer/chaucer.htm

In three years after this he succeeded to the title, and in two years subsequently he was one of the commissioners appointed to treat with the Kings of France and Scotland,   touching a truce made by them wit h the King of England. In the 21stRichard II, he was made Constable of the Tower of London , and shortly afterwards advanced in full parliament to the dignity of the Earl of Westmoreland . His lordship was of the privy council to King Richard, and had much favor from that monarch , yet he was one of the most active in raising Henry, of Lancaster, to the throne as Henry Iv , and was rewarded by the new king in the first year of his reign with a grant of the county and honor of Richmond for his life, and with the great office of Earl Marshal of England. Soon after this he stoutly resisted the Earl of Northumberland in his rebellion, and forced the Percies, who had advanced as far as Durham to fall back upon the Prudhoe, when the battle of Shrewbury ensued in which the gallant Hotspur sustained so signal a defeat, and closed his impetuous career. The earl was afterwards governor of the town and castle of Carlisle, warden of the West Marshes towards Scotland and governor of Roxborourh. He was also a knight of the Garter . The favor of Henry VII I continued for the Wyatt Family and this Thomas served as ambassador to the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V. Alleged to have had an affair with Anne Boleyn prior to her marriage to Henry VIII he was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1536 but was released and was later knighted at Westminster.

Thomas Wyatt, son of the poet, at first supported Mary I. But then her intent to marry Phillip II of Spain concerned Thomas Wyatt that the country would come under the rule of a Spanish King. Considering it his duty to prevent the marriage he led a rebellion against Queen Mary fro m Allington, entering London and demanding that the Tower be surrendered to him. Sir Thomas had a reputation for recklessness and was imprisoned in 154 3 for a week or two for taking part with Henry Howard, Earl of Surry in a street riot. In the spring of1543, King Henry VIII had allied himself with Charles V and declared war against France. In the autumn of 1543, Sir Thomas was a volunteer in the fight at Landrecies and was commended by Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk, for his gallant behavior. The following year he was given a responsible command at the siege and capture of Boulogne. Thereafter he went abroad and travelled extensively in Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland, acquiring a knowledge o f Military matters and recognition as a skillfu land daring captain. The date of his return i s uncertain, but in the autumn of 1549 he submitted to protector Somerset's Council, a timely project for a selective militia to provide a safeguard against civil disturbances. Sir Thomas seems to have used his position as Sheriff of Kent in 1551 to create a rudimentary orgnization on his own initiative .After the death of Edward VI, Sir Thomas Wyatt the younger supported Mary I and proclaimed her at Rochester. By the end of the year, rumors of the proposed marriage between Mary and the future King Phillip II of Spain forced Sir Thomas into an extensive conspiracy. He looked upon such a marriage as being likely to bring England under the dominance of Spain and therefore be disastrous to his country. Sir Thomas felt it his responsibility t o prevent this marriage.

It was originally planned that Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk, Sir James Crofts on the Welsh Marshes, Sir Thomas Wyatt in Kent and Edward Courtenay, Earl of Devon and Sir Peter Carew in the Southwest would raise their friends and dependents. The plot was discovered and forced into premature action in January 1554, with the result that Carew did not show, Devon turned informer and Suffolk and Croft were able to make only feeble gestures. Sir Thomas summoned a meeting of his friends at Allingtn, and the 25th of January was fixed for the rising. Sir Thomas and some 4,000 men marched on London and on the 26th occupied Rochester and issued a proclamation to the county. Lord Abergavenny and Sir Robert Southwell, the Sheriff of Kent, were deserted by their men who either disbanded or went over to Sir Thomas. A detachment of London train bands, sent against him by Queen Mary under the command of the Duke of Norfolk, followed their example. The rising seemed such a critical situation to the Queen that a deputation was sent t o Sir Thomas asking his terms. He insisted that the Tower should be surrendered to him, and t hat the Queen should be put in his charge. The insolence of these demands caused Queen Mary to proceed to Guildhall and to address the citizens of London on Feb. 1, 1554 on the need of meeting the demands. Sir Thomas was proclaimed a traitor and more than 20,000men signed up for the protection of the city. Special precautions were taken for the security of the court an d Tower; many bridges across the Thames River within a distance of 15 miles were torn down. O n February 3rd a reward and the annual value of 100 pounds was offered for the capture of Sir Thomas Wyatt. When he reached Southwark on Feb 3, 1554, he found London Bridge occupied in force. He was unable to penetrate into the city. Sir Thomas was driven from Southwark by the threats of Sir John Brydges, later Lord Chandon, , Lieutenant of the Tower.

Sir Thomas then marched up the river to Kingston, where he crossed the Thames and made his way to Ludgate with part of his followers. Some of his men were cut off, others lost heart an d deserted. His only hope was that a rising would take place within the city, but the royal forces kept order, and after attempting to force the gate, Sir Thomas surrendered. He was brought to trial on March 15 and could make no defense. His execution was delayed in hope that in order to save his life he could compromise the Queen's half sister, Princess Elizabeth. He was executed on April 11, 1554 and one the scaffold expressly cleared the princess of all complicity in the rising. The next day his head was hung on the gallows at Haymarket beside Hyde Park, but it was stolen on April 17 and never recovered.

Sir Thomas Wyatt the younger, married Jane, daughter of Sir William Haut of Bishopbourne and Wavering. Sir Thomas and Jane haute Wiatt had a large family, only four of whom lived to maturity.

Was born at Yarmouth, c.c., March 3, 1729/30 O.s., ordained in this place June 3, 1761.

Relinquished his pastoral charge in June, 1803. Died in Tiverton, R.I., Sept. 24, 1807.

Back

Sackville West was son of Thomas West, physician, the son of _____West, the son of Cap. Franc is West, brother of the third Lord De La Warr, Governor of Virginia. Capt. West came from Eng land to Virginia in 1608.

The publication of this did not settle the question but instead brought up two or three other points that were open to argument. The marriage between Sackville and De Le Warr families w as too late to have been responsible for the naming of Dr. Sackville West, in 1729, and more over, this physician had always been known as "Sackfield" West. This writer has only one word to add: there were Sackvilles in Wiltshire in 1600. (Wiltshire collections by Aubrey and Jackson, p. 351.) The native home of Francis West of Duxbury seems to have been in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. He was born about 1626 and came to America as a carpenter. He married Margery Reeves, Feb. 27, 1639, also of Duxbury, but they spent part of their lives in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
