Archie D. Carmichael

Descendants of Carmichael

This genealogy begins with Candace Smith Carmichael's father just to clarify the relationship between W. T. Singletary and A. D. Carmichael.  Candace is the wife of A. D. Carmichael.  She was very sick when A. D. was born and her sister Nancy, wife of W. T. Singletary, who had no children, offered to keep the child until she got "better."  Time passed and every time Candace would make an effort to get her son, Nancy would encourage her to "get better first."  Meanwhile A. D. was enjoying the life of a spoiled only child and grew up happily in Nancy and W. T.'s home.  Mrs. A. D. Whiddon tells of the relationship in her "History of Dothan" written for her Dothan Garden Club Feb, 15, 1945 and later published in the Dothan Eagle.

The Joe SANDERS family came from Garrard Cross-roads, Ala., and engaged in general merchandise, buggies, wagons, mules and horses. The sons developed the Poplar Head Mule Co. on South St. Andrews Street. Later Messrs. John SANDERS, W T SINGLETARY, and A D WHIDDON had a partnership business known as John SANDERS and Co. When this was dissolved, Mr. SANDERS took his elder son, Joe, in business with him, and Joe now operates Sanders Mule Co. and Sanders Trading Co. in the same location. Mr. SINGLETARY and Mr. WHIDDON formed a partnership, Singletary and Whiddon, and operated a general merchandise business on South Foster Street, furnishing farmers from groceries to farm implements and machinery. When this was dissolved, Mr. SINGLETARY took his adopted-son, Archie D. CARMICHAEL, in business with him and operates at the same location under the name Singletary and Carmichael. Mr. WHIDDON and his only son, Beaty, formed a partnership under the name of Whiddon Implement and Truck Co. on South Oates Street, which is now owned and operated by Beaty WHIDDON.

Descendant Celeste Carmichael Hart says that A. D. was never "adopted" just loved and cherished by all: mother and father, and spoiled by aunt and uncle
