Descendants of Andrew Everett Wells

Son of John C. Wells who was Eben's brother.  Charles lived in Jacksonville, Florida, and was a world renowned gemologist.

Thomas Bonaparte Wells

According to Nancy Wells Luke (lukeranch@mindspring.com) the information above is wrong. She says this is John Cottle Wells b. 1832, third son of Andrew Everett Wells and Delilah Cottle, who practiced law and was later a judge in Clay County, GA.

Elizabeth Wells

Daughter of Eben and Tamsey, wife of Noel Baxter Dowling,

Nancy Wells Luke writes:

Some of your data is clearly taken from the wonderful narratives left to us by Glenn Wells of AL, whose carefully typed pages were actually what sparked my own interest in genealogy when I read them in the 1970's. My work on the Wells line has shown that Glenn's information was about 98% accurate; the only "errors" I found were in stories reported to him by others. At a glance it appears that many of the family groups on your site have been mixed up ... the names are essentially correct, but some children have been placed under the wrong set of parents, while others have been left out altogether. I understand you're immersed in another project at this time, but when your schedule allows, getting back to basics by finding these families on the census would go a long way toward clarifying who's who.

I HATE being the bearer of disappointing news, but the genealogist in me can't help but speak out. While I celebrate your efforts to share your family history with others by creating this site, leaving it up for anyone and everyone to come along and copy/paste is something like operating a puppy mill. You started out wanting to share something special, but by allowing incorrect information to be copied over and over you actually become the irresponsible breeder who keeps reproducing a weaker and weaker product.

I did some work for another family just last year that had been barking up the wrong genealogical tree for more than 40 years, all because a great uncle failed to check facts and relied instead on assumptions. Imagine how rotten these people felt when I had to tell them the last 40 years of research had been wasted, and it was necessary to chop four generations and a Revolutionary soldier off their family tree!  In the words of my teacher and mentor, NEVER accept what anyone shares with you as fact (even if it comes from Grandma); always verify the data yourself.

She is right. Having been chastised now for sharing this information with you, I suggest that should you be reading this page and want to confirm the information please do so. Should you join any genealogical society they will require the proofs so going to the census and getting birth and death certificates is certainly something all serious genealogists should do. this is only meant as a guide that I share. I stand by the caveat at the bottom of the page. My husband says that something is worth what some damn fool will pay for it and since this effort cost you nothing to read, I guess that is what it is worth."Copyright 1996  These are my own working genealogy files that I share with you.  The errors are my own.  But, perhaps they will give you a starting point.  All original writing is copyrighted.  Webmaster" Sharman Ramsey

Generation No. 1

1. ANDREW EVERETT2 WELLS (HUGO1)1 was born Abt. 17971, and died in Jefferson County, Georgia1. He married DELILAH COTTLE1, daughter of JOHN COTTLE and ELIZABETH. She was born 18071.

Notes for ANDREW EVERETT WELLS:

[Burson with dothan 2011.ged]

Andrew Everett Wells was born about the year 1797. He died in 1847, or about that time at the age of 50 years. Information from Will Wells of Ashford, Alabama indicates that he died very suddenly or was only sick a few days. Will thinks he remembers hearing that he had a blow to the head, which caused his last illness. He was buried in a family lot near his home which was in Sumpter County, Georgia, at that time, now in Schley County which was formed from Sumpter County after his death.

The Caudle family were supposedly Loyalists and one of their sons was hanged. It appears that John J. Caudle changed his name to John J. Cottle in the late 1700's. Can anyone offer any documentation or Caudle family background. Thanks.

Query:

Seeking any information on John (Eli) COTTLE/CAUDLE who received from the 1805 land lottery a royal grant in Montgomery Co. Georgia, I believe he died there c. 1808, his wife Delilah received a land grant to Wilkinson, and she was living in Montgomery Co. during the 1807 land lottery. She died in Elbert Co. Georgia in 1810, leaving her estate to Lurinna COTTLE, who married Wiley SUTTON in 1812 in Jefferson Co. Georgia, where her COTTLE/CAUDLE cousins lived.

Millie, I live in Montgomery County, TN which adjoins Christian County, KY. My gg-grandmother was Mary Ann Caudle daughter of John and Elizabeth Delilah Caudle. John had brothers named Archibald, and Sterling. They lived in Dinwiddie County, VA. John Came to Montgomery County, TN in 1838. Archibald came to Williamson County, TN in the 1820s where he died. Sterling remained in Dinwiddie County where he died.

Benjamin administered the estate of Sterling in Dinwiddie County VA, before he moved to Montgomery County, TN.

Please contact me using my e-mail address. Maybe we can help each other

Dear Becky,

My name is Margaret Harlow. I am a descendant of John and Elizabeth Delilah Caudle through their daughter Mary Ann who married William Vaughan. They were also the parents of John Caudle, Jr., their only son. He was born in Dinwiddie County, VA and married Fredonia OHara in Montgomery County, TN on 29 Dec 1859. is mother and father both died here in Montgomery County. I have a deed made to him by his father John Caudle, Sr. before he died transferring all his property to him. He states he had already given all to his other children what he wanted them to have and that John, JR was his only son.

I lost track of John Jr. after the 1860 census and could never find he sold the land his father and mother lived on. This was not unusual though because our court system was closed down during the Civil War. (I live in Montgomery County TN now).

My John Caudle came here several years before Benjamin did. I feel sure that Benjamin was a son of the brother of John, Sr. whose name was Sterling Caudle.

If you have any information on where John, Jr. and Fredonia went to when they left Montgomery County etc., I would love to share what I have on the family with you.

I believe, without searching my records, that Fredonia's parents were Daniel OHara and Hester Alexander.

I hope this isn't to late and you are still there and searching. I jst learned about your query in GenForum.

Notes for EBEN JOSIAH WELLS:

[Burson with dothan 2011.ged]

1 AUTH married sister of deceased wife

It is known that their families came from the Carolinas, probably before the marriage of Delilah Cottle and Andrew Eve rett Wells, about 1825. At the time of the death of Andre w Everett Wells, he owned two lots of land or 405 acres, mo re or less. In the early 1850's, Delilah Cottle Wells, aft er the death of her husband, sold the land and divided the money among the living heirs, taking a child's part as he r share. Her nephew, Sollie Cottle, then in his late 20' s or early 30's, was appointed guardian for her minor children. It is thought that each heir received about $1,000.

At about the time this sale was made, Eben Josiah Wells cam e to Alabama, near the town of Abbeville, and invested hi s share in a home and farm. I have been unable so far a s to know what disposition Daniel made of his share. Fro m the best information at this writing, John Cottle used so me of his share to educate himself. It is known that jus t a little later he was teaching school in Alabama and mayb e in Georgia, also. One of the schools he served in Alabama was Choctawhatchee Academy, near the county line between Dale and Henry Counties in Alabama. He was fastidious i n his dressing throughout his entire life, and as a young m an, very few outdressed him; when teaching at the above Academy, he would wear spotless linen suits.

When the Georgia farm was sold and the money divided amon g the heirs, as previously stated, the widow accepted a child's portion as her share. In the 1850's she came to Alabama, bought a farm near her son, Eben Josiah Wells, and live d there two years. She became dissatisfied and moved bac k to Georgia. When she returned to Georgia, Sollie Cottle , her nephew and the guardian of her two minor children, Robert Christopher and Andrew Clinton, invested their money i n a farm, which he turned over to his Aunt, Delilah Cottl e Wells, mother of said children. She lived there during t he Civil War and in the area until her dean in 1987.

As stated, Eben Josiah Wells, my great-grandfather, bought a farm near Abbeville Alabama and was soon married. He later sold this farm and bought another where he lived at th e time he volunteered for service in the Confederate Army , and where he lied at the time of his first wife's death , who died during the first year of the Civil War. She was buried

d on the farm about four miles from Abbeville, either in 18 61 or 1862. When grandma Tamsey Johnson Wells became sick , Eben Josiah Wells was given a furlough to be at her side . After her death and burial, he left his four children, Haywood, Elizabeth, Thomas and John with his dead wife's sister, Eliza A. Johnson, and returned to his duties with th e Confederate Army.

When the war was over and he was discharged, he returned ho me. He found his children loved Eliza A Johnson as a mother, but she would not let them call her mother, but Aunt 'Li za. Shortly after, he married Eliza A. Johnson, his firs t wife's sister, and to this union one child, Mollie Angeline, was born on March 20, 1867. His oldest son, Haywood, w ho was a teenager, became sick and died. He was buried beside his mother. He died of typhoid fever. Several years l ater, Even Josiah Wells, erected a iron picket fence aroun d the two graves. Years later, Ray Dowling of Pinckard, Al abama, cleaned up the tombstones and painted the fence wit h aluminum paint. Tamsey Johnson Wells was his grandmother . To get to these graves , go out the Eufaula road to the Graball community. Turn left on the Clio road and it i s about a mile on the left. On May 28, 1946, when Ray Dowling visited those graves they wee on the farm then owned b y Olton Sowell, Rote 2, Abbeville, Alabama. Eben Josiah We lls was named for his Uncle Eben Cottle. Elizabeth E. Well s was named for her Aunt Elizabeth Wells who had died at about age 15. John Walter Wells was named for his Uncle John C. Wells.

Around 1873 or 1874, when his daughter Mollie was about si x or seven years old, Eben Josiah Wells sold his farm nea r Abbeville and moved to Dale County, about 3 1/2 miles south of Ozark. He bought a farm from his younger brother, An drew Clinton Wells, who had become dissatisfied with it. M y grandfather, Thomas B. Wells, was a young man when this m ove was made and it was here that he met and courted his future wife, Henrietta J. Mullins, whom he married December 1 7, 1874. At the time his first child was born on August 1 , 1876, he was living about a mile south of Ozark on a far m which is in the Ozark City limits today. James A Dildy lives in a beautiful home about where my father was born. T his first child's name, taken from both the Wells Family an d the Mullins family, was Louis Eben Wells.

sometime after Louis Eben was born, Grandpa Tom Wells move d to a farm next to or near his father, Eben Josiah Wells , about 3 1/2 miles south of Ozark. They could have move d to Grandpa Mullins farm who had settled in the he area i n 1837. Grandpa Mullins had died in 1868 and was buried o n the farm beside two of his children who had died, but th e property still belonged to the heirs, one of whom was grandma Henrietta Mullins Wells. Grandpa Tom's second child , Charlie Thomas Wells, was born July 21, 1878, and died a s an 8 year old when they lived on this farm in 1886. He i s buried in the Newton City Cemetery beside his great aunt Mary Gipson, who is buried in an unmarked grave. He ha s a small tombstone erected on his grave.

In the early 1890s, great granpa Eben Josiah Wells moved t o Daleville, Alabama, where he engaged in the mercantile business until he retired a few years before his death in 190 5. He is buried in the Old Daleville Cemetery beside his 2 nd wife, Eliza A. Johnson Wells. It is believed that Eliz a A. Wells, who was my step- great grandma, was mentally il l at the time of her death. She apparently set herself o n fire and either died at the time, or a few days later fro m the he severe burns.

Grandpa Tom Wells, apparently moved to Daleville before hi s father, Eben Josiah Wells. He has two children buried i n the Daleville Cemetery which are marked by small tombstones. One child, Tamsey Octavia Wells, died at age five in 1890. Other children Lemmie A. Wells, died at age 5 months i n 1894. Grandpa Tom Wells was also in the mercantile business in Daleville, though I don't know if he owned a separate business or was in partnership with his father Eben Josiah Wells. I do know that my father, Louis Eben Wells was a partner in this business, or else worked for grandpa Tom at the time of his marriage to my Mother, Blanche Brantley Dowling, June 8, 1898.

I remember my father, L. E. Wells, recalling his youth in t he years he spent on the farm south of Ozark, would tell about going to church at Old Springhill Church, which is located at the top of Klondike Hill on highway 123 (old 231) between Ozark and Newton. I took him to a church service a t Springhill once after WWII. They do not have services there now. Across high 123 on the Klondike Ewell road, old Lee cemetery, which was connected with the Mullins family, i s located. He also told me that his nearest neighbor who had children approximately his own age was a negro family named Harper who owned a farm across the branch from grandpa Wells. Some of the Harper offspring still live in the area. Another friend was another negro named Peter Everett , who carried the mail between Ozark and Newton on horseback. Papa said he would meet Uncle Peter every day to find out the news in Ozark and Newton.

My brother Nigel was the only child of Louis Eben and Blanc he Dowling Wells to be born in Ozark. He was born on October 1, 1899, in the family home which sat on a lot back of t he First United Methodist Church. Reverend Marvin Carroll later owned the home and it was his heirs that sold the p roperty to the Church. Dr. Ard attended my mother during h is birth. My father worked for Mr. Bill Casey who owned the Dale County Bank, which was located on the west side of t he Square in Ozark. He was a cotton buyer in season and traded mules and had other duties in the bank. Mr. Casey, at a later date unknown to the writer liquidated the bank, paid off all depositors in full, and left Ozark. I he left any relatives, I have been unable to find them.

When my father worked for Mr. Casey, he had a side job. H e was an ice merchant on Saturday and Sunday. His ice would come into Ozark on a passenger train from Montgomery wrapped in sawdust and burlap. He stored the ice in the basement of the building on the northeast corner of the square in Ozark. The building is owned by Fred Barkett Jr. and the last tenant was a men's clothing store named "The Hub. " Local citizens would bring their beer and home brew to t he basement to cool it. He moved clothing to Daleville eit her in 1900 or 1901 and went into the mercantile business with my grandpa, Thomas Bonaparte Wells. He opened the Ban k of Daleville about 1910. The firs automobile he ever bought was a 1915 Ford with a brass radiator.

MAYFLOWER DESCENDENTS THROUGH THE LAWSON line

Grandmother, why did you never tell us that we were descend ed from the Mayflower?

They were horsethieves, misfits and religious fanatics.

Noel Baxter Dowling built a home in Dothan, Alabama, at 40 1 North Alice Street, which eventually became the home of his daughter Cora Lee Dowling and her husband, Richard Hawthorne Rams e y. Richard Hawthorne Ramsey came to Pinckard for work on the Midland Railroad. His father, David Wardlaw Ramsey was a veteran of the Civil War who trained at Tulane University as a doctor after the War and then became a Baptist minister. The church at which he preached was on t h e property that wasonce part of a large plantation owned by Joseph Richard Hawthorne, his wife's father. David Wardlaw Ramseys father, Abiezer Clark Ramsey, had been a Methodist circuit rider before marrying Elizabeth Amanda Wardlaw Bonham, the widow of Simon Bonham, planter and lawyer who moved his family from Abbeville, South Carolina, to Wilcox County, Alabama . Soon after Simon Bonham died, Elizabeth Amanda Wardlaw s brother-in-law was killed with his friend Travis at the Alamo.

There were many who were left "land poor" after the War. So ns left their home places in search of opportunities. The Railroad was one such opportunity and brought Richard Hawthorne Ramsey to Pinckard, Alabama. Richard and Cora raised their four children, Richard Hayward, Jose p hRobert, Cassie and Francis, in this house (above right). Their son,Robert Ramsey remembered driving the cow from his parents house on Alice Street to his grandparents farm in Pinck a rd (below).

TAX AID NEARLY FAINTS AT OFFER OF ANTICIPATION.

Deputy tax collector R. H. Ramsey is trying hard to collect delinquent taxes--long overdue and subject to sale Sept . 17.

Fancy Ramsey's amazement Saturday when J. C. Hardy and John Conner, farmers, entered his office and wanted to pay next year's taxes in advance.

"I want to pay my taxes and debts," said Conner, "and see how much I have left."

But Ramsey couldn't accept the payment. His term expires Oct. 1 and it's the new tax collector's duty to get next year 's taxes.

"That's the first time a thing like that has happened since I've been in office," Ramsey chuckled. "I wish everybody were like that--I wouldn't be worrying about collecting from the 150 delinquents."

Hi Sharman,

I was surfing and found your site. It is great the amount o f workyouhavedone.

No, it was my aunt Mavis who owned the antique shop at Ponte Vedra Beach. She is deceased . Her daughter, Mavis also had a shopin Jacksonville. Mavis has three daughters who have children.

There were three sisters- Mavis, Betty ms the past two years. I n fac t , I a m now at myparents hometryingto take care o f their needs which have grown beyond the hired care givers time and experience. My father will be 89 and has had musculard ystrophy the past 30 yrs.

Betty lived in NYC and Greenwich.

My mother lives my father J.L. McMullen, in the small town of Live Oak-halfway between Jacksonville and Tallahassee (where I live). My mother is known for her gorgeous yard and garde n - i t has been in newspapers, on T.V., in magazines, et c. etc. My mother's perseverance and dedication transformed a wilderness 65 yrs. ago into a tranquil heavenly magnificent garden! She dedicated it to my parents 7 yr. oldson, Geri, who was killed while riding his bike the year before I was born.

All of us adored Cassie! She visited in my home with Betty on a trip through Live Oak and on to Jacksonville. I have a picture taken in my living room of Cassie, Betty and someone else .

Last year I took an early retirement from teaching to see about my parents who have failing health. Mother especially has been hospitalized numerous times. Over the years I have wanted to take her to Dothan and Pinkard. It has been many, years since she has been there. I am not sure she is up to it now.

I printed out your pages on the website which she enjoyed reading and seeing. My parents are amazed at what technology can do.

It is getting late and the day starts early here. I have been here since New Years Eve trying to decide if my mother on the latest trip home isgoing to be able to stay this time or if she may have to go into a nursing home. It is a very tough decision for me to make! I have been dividing my time between Tallahassee and Live Oak.

I am using my fathers e-mail address while I am in Live Oak.

During the early 1930s Nigel had a theater in Ozark and during their engagement Jewell would take up tickets at the window. He loved baseball and hired out as a catcher for an y team that would provide transportation (usually the train ) and a meal around the Wiregrass during the early 1900s . Although Nigel was blind in his later years, he would li sten to the Braves on TV.
