Butler
Theobald
Fitzwalter went to
Chief Butler of all Ireland, unafraid of anything;
He gave to us our family name, and that is why we sing -
The clan goes marching on.
- Chorus -
Glory to
the tribe of
Virile, worthy, brave and loyal.
Glory,
The clan goes marching on.
Theobald
Fitzwalter was the father of our clan;
Posterity of Thomas, James and Edward never ran;
Nicholas was virile, Richard was a sturdy man.
The clan goes marching on.
We have
our dukes and peasants, common folk and blue bloods, too;
We greet each other with a smile and "Cousin, howdy-do"
This goes with all the
The clan goes marching on.
The Butler
I would love to know if Alys Dandridge who married Captain Thomas Butler around 1686 in King William county Virginia was related to Martha Dandridge Washington.

BIOGRAPHY: Please note: The Butler line (according to Prof. Allen) actually begins with Thomas Pincerna, a servant to King John of England (1199-1216.) Thomas' surname "Pincerna" is a late Latin word from the Greek and it means literally, "mixer of drinks," describing the office he performed for King John. We are then descended from Robertus Pincerna several generations later and his son, the first in our line to carry the Butler name in English (mixed with Norman French) Robert Le Boteler. Pincerna's other sons were John, Thomas and William who was a priest .

BIOGRAPHY:Thomas Butler I, who began as a haberdasher in London, is our immigrant ancestor of the American Butlers. He married Jan. 16, 1625/26 in St. Magnus Martyr Church, London , a widow named Joan Mt. Stephen. When William Claiborn, who had married his sister, Elizabeth Butler, was granted land on Kent Island, Thomas Butler with his brother John joined Claiborn there. Thomas held 100 acres and paid a yearly rent of two barrels of corn and two capons . They soon found themselves in a hornet's nest. Kent Island was between the new colonies of Maryland and Viriginia, and both claimed it. The dispute was not only one of land, but o f religion, since Maryland was a Catholic Colony and VA Protestant. John Butler was arrested by Cecil Calvert, Lord Baltimore, for treason and threatened with hanging in 1638. In 164 4 Thomas Butler, along with many other Maryland Protestants, refused to pay taxes to the Catholic government and was declared an enemy of the state. Soon after, Thomas Butler died, apparently of natural causes. His widow married a merchant, Edward Thompson, and they, along with the Butler children "escaped" south to the VA colony about 1650.Note: Edward Thompson was the son of Edward Thompson (d. 1657), the son of Thomas Thompson o f Essex, England. Edward the younger first appears on a list of persons transported from England (port of London, but probably from Essex) to St. Christopher on the ship 'Matthew' under captain R. Goodland , 1635. He was 18 at the time, hence born about 1617. Edward, along with Thomas Butler's orphans settled in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

Possibly our Thomas?
Elaine W. Krause ewkrause@worldnet.att.net
It starts out whimsically (to me) by tracing an Irish line all the way back to Adam & Eve. (Don't all of us long to do that?) BUT, by the 16th century, it starts to firm up. For instance, shows John Butler III (c. 1565) of Starnbrooke/Bedfordshire and Thobie/Essex married twice . Once to Cressit St. John, with whom he had 6 children. 2nd Wife was Mary Gedge, with whom h e had 4 more, to include Nathaniel, Member of the Council of Virginia and Governor of Bermudas. As it turns out, Nathaniel was not the ancestor of mariner Thomas Butler, referred to here in David Butler's post, but his half-uncle. Thomas Butler having descended from the marriage to Cressit St. John. You can also find genealogies for the John Butler (of Essex) line o n the LDS Ancestral File search site, and possibly others. (See <http://www.familysearch.org/ Search/searchaf.asp> .) Use the spouse's name (Cressit St. John) to distinguish between this line and a whole bunch of other John Butlers.I tried searching for Nathaniel Butler and/o r Mary Gedge and came up empty. But the John Butler/St. John line is on there. You can also search some of the old documents at the Library of Virginia web site and find references (m any) to Nathaniel Butler, none of which describe his lineage.
