Question:  What does the word "agent" mean when listed as a job for an individual on an 1850 census?

Jim Lindsay submitted to the Lindsey DNA group.  He is a first cousin once removed of my husband Joel Ramsey.  Jim's father Seva Lindsay and Joe's grandmother Alice Lindsay Hawkins were brother and sister.

I wrote Susan Grabek, Lindsey Group 2, requesting information about the DNA results of our family representative, Jim Jordan Lindsay (my husband's 1st cousin once removed) as compared to

Lindsay Code No.: L0102

Earliest Known Progenitor: Jacob Abrell Lindsey b. October 15, 1806 Bibb County, Georgia, d. December 26, 1876 Mississippi, m. Emmaline C. J. Hamilton January 1, 1860.

What clues have we had to associate Benjamin F. Lindsey with Jacob and Elizabeth Ford Lindsey?  The conclusions herein offered were arrived at by
 1.  .  Geographic location

Notice on the GPS map below that Bibb county is contiguous to Jones, Crawford, and Monroe counties..

Georgia Counties

We know this is our Benjamin Lindsay who is listed in Crawford County whose age is 25 in 1850.

Benjamin Lindsay is listed in Crawford County in the 1850 census as a 25 year old male working as an overseer with $100.00 value of property.

Maddox, "Crawford County Georgia", Early Georgia Marriage Roundup, p. 94.Lists Lindsey, Benjamin F. -Mary T. Jordan, May 11, 1851.

2.  Age

Benjamin Lindsey, son of Jacob and Elizabeth had a son who was born in 1824, a year that would fit according to the date the census was taken and the month of Benjamin Lindsay's actual birth.  This information was gathered by Mrs. Charles Newton, genealogist for Monroe County, Georgia.

3His Name and the Elimination of others on censuses with that same name

While at first glance one might think that would provide a definite answer to the father of a man, in those times, the appellation JR could indicate "the younger".  Perhaps there was a relative with the same name.  Jr. merely defined who that person was in relation to another.  It would appear that in the neighboring county there was another Benjamin F. Lindsey who died in 1830 and was probably a second cousin to the Jacob Abrell from whom our Benjamin is descended.  Also, according to the records, there was a decision by the sons of Benjamin F. Lindsey to change the spelling of their name from "ey" to "ay".  When asked, the older members still alive who married into the family, said it had to do with discriminating the poor Lindsays from the rich Lindseys.  That sets up lots more questions when considering those children lost their father at a very early age and were taken in by their mother's sister and her husband.

4. DNA Test

Susan Grabek, researcher, writes: I think it is possible that Benjamin F. Lindsey (b. ca. 1824) was a brother to Jacob Abrell (b. ca. 1806), but there is no document that I know of that could prove a relationship. There is a one marker difference in the DNA tests for Jacob Abrell's descendant and Benjamin F's descendant.  At this point, the DNA tests do not allow us to prove relationships because everyone in Group 2 has nearly matching markers, with many descendants having only a one marker mismatch with the group haplotype.  Jacob Abrell's descendant is one of those that matches the group haplotype perfectly, as do three others, and the four descendants with perfect matches do not descend from the same patriarch, at least not that we can discern at this time.  The group haplotype seems to represent the non-mutated DNA of Edmund Lindsey Sr. (b. 1697) and his probable brother John (b. ca. 1700) of Frederick Co., VA.  The DNA of L0173 does not match any other project participant in Group 2 perfectly.

The DNA testing

So, from the above evidence and a review of the records obtained in Georgia, this is my guess at our lineage.  It is a jumping off point.  I would love to hear from someone who had definitive proof of Benjamin Lindsay's mother and father.  Circumstantial evidence points this way.

Jacob Sr. moved his family to Wilkes County in 1785, settling on land he was granted on Morris Creek. "Family tradition" says that Phebe was the daughter of Isaac Lindsey, brother of Jacob Sr. Proof of this has never been found.

This information is from Mrs. Merle Shumuary, St. Johns, Arizona:

I cannot give you any information on the date of the marriage of Jacob Lindsey and Elizabeth Abrell, their births or deaths. I know only that they were married before 1772. The first record I have of Jacob Lindsey is 1760 when he witnessed a deed between Edmond Lindsey and Edmond Lindsey, Jr. He witnessed a deed in 1767 when Edmund Lindsey, Jr., leased land to Edward Corder, Jr. (The deed was signed Edmund Lindsey but in the body of the deed it was Edmund Lindsey, Jr.) He signed as a witness again in 1767 when John and Mary Reagan of Frederick County gave a Power of Attorney to John and Mary Reagan of Frederick County gave a Power of attorney to Edmon Lindsey , Jr ., saying they were moving to Berkeley County, S. Carolina, which is where John Lindsey moved --the section where they went is now Newberry County. In 1770 he signed as a witness when Edmund, Sr., leased land to Edmund, Jr. In 1773 he signed as a witness when Edmond, Jr., leased land to John Thomas. (The reasonabIe vary the spelling of Edmund is that the deeds did. ) I n 1782 he witnessed a deed between Edmond, Sr., and John Lindsey and the land was described in 294 as Longmarsh, joining Jacob Lindsey. Elijah Lindsey also witnessed this and it is the only record ever found of him. In 1784, Jacob and Elizabeth his wife, sold their land to Edmond Clare. It would be my guess that they went to South Carolina. Jacob Lindsey witnessed a deed but Thomas Lindsey and Lydia his wife, made in 1794, Newberry County, originally part of Berkeley County, South Carolina.

The early Lindseys were in the Colonial Army in Virginia. I suppose in or near where Frederick County is now. After selling land in 1784, they moved south to the Carolinas, Alabama and Georgia. Most of the following descendents are of the Baptist or Primitive Baptist belief, Methodist or Presbyterian.

Their Children (note by Mrs. Newton: This is what we THINK. nothing to prove it:)

2. Jacob Abrell b. Oct. 6, 1806 (Mrs. Newton Notes: My great greatgrandfather)

John seems to have been closely associated in Wilkes Co. with an Elijah LINDSAY, a Thomas LINDSAY, and an Edmond LINDSAY. Elijah had a son Jacob, and Jacob's son Jacob was b. in Wilkes Co. in 1778, and married his first cousin Phebe LINDSAY, b. in SC in 1781, daughter of Isaac and Rachel LINDSAY. All are said to descend from a Thomas LINDSAY of England, but various researchers now think that Thomas was actually one of the clan coming out of Edmond LINDSAY of Porttobacco, Charles Co., MD, whose descendants went to Winchester, VA, then fanned out south and west from there.
