“Then gather around this sacred spot, when the flowers sweeten the air, and the song of the birds makes melody with the children that cluster around you, and tell them the story of their fathers and brothers. Teach them that man is noblest when he died for man, and that their fathers were heroes and patriots worthy of the admiration of the world.”
This hazy picture is one I took out the bus window as a fleeting mention was made of the memorial to the signing of the Magna Charta by our very English guide. Set back from the road that winds around through the country to Windsor Castle and on to Ascot, this little pavilion is an understated recognition of that moment at Runnymede that meant so much to the liberty of man and the course of history. The men who forced the signature chanced all in standing down King John. Ironically those descendants of these Magna Charta knights and barons intermarried with the royal line and also share the blood of the King those knights challenged.

· William Marshal was a man who lived his life according to his sense of honour, and his sense of honour was defined in the laws and customs of feudalism and knighthood. It is that sense of honour that made no man equal to William Marshal, knight, Earl of Pembroke and Striguil, Lord of Leinster, and Regent of England. He was honored in his day for his character and is buried in the Temple Church, London, England. (The Magna Carta Sureties, 1215, Frederich Weiss)

For more information and interesting branches to climb, I suggest John Bennett Boddie’s Historic Southern Families, Magna Charta Sureties by Frederich Lewis Weis, Ancestral Roots also by Weis, Henry Duke, Councilor: His Descendants and Connections by Walter Garland Duke, and The Story of the Irish. The stories of these individuals gives one a personal perspective on history. Remember, I am an amateur genealogist. This is the information as I understand it using these references along with Burke’s books on genealogy. These “genealogies” merely skim the surface and are included only for interest and to demonstrate how we are all a part of a line of active participants in the history of our world. Please check this out on your own before using this information as authority.
It was one the trip to England on which I took the picture of the memorial to the signing of the Magna Charta that I developed an appreciation for tea and scones. It was in a tea room on the wall of the city of Chester, the site of the beautiful cathedral at Chester where our ancestors, both named Thomas Mallory, served as Dean, that I had the best tea and scones of our trip. Since then it has become my habit in any city we visit to find the most elegant hotel in the city and have afternoon tea. I collect their books on tea.
